Illinois inmate gets 2 more years on weapons count

BENTON — A federal prison inmate already serving a 17-year sentence on Missouri drug and gun charges has been ordered to spend two more years behind bars for having a weapon in a southern Illinois lockup.

A federal judge in Benton sentenced 32-year-old Lamar Elmer Smith on Thursday for illegal weapons possession.

Authorities say Smith was serving time at the federal prison in Marion when he was found to have a 17-inch-long piece of sharpened metal that resembled an ice pick made out fence parts.

Smith’s original sentence out of Missouri was on convictions of distributing cocaine and possessing a firearm during a drug crime.
