Crystal Lake C. derails Grayslake Central
The chances were there as Grayslake Central's girls soccer team pursued its third straight Fox Valley Fox Division girls soccer title. The Rams needed to get a victory in one their final two matches.
It didn't happen, though, as Grayslake Central lost to visiting Crystal Lake Central 1-0 on Saturday morning in Grayslake.
“We just didn't finish our chances when we had them,” Grayslake Central coach Mike McCaulou said. “We had the better of the play.”
The Rams finished the regular season at 9-5-2 overall, and 4-2 in a tie for second place Fox Division tie with Grayslake North and Johnsburg. Crystal Lake Central goes to 7-5-1 and won the title with a 5-1 division mark.
“It's been the tale of our year,” said McCaulou, whose team also lost a road game at Hampshire 1-0 on Thursday. “It seems to be our lack of experience. We're a pretty young team and we don't show the hunger. It would've been nice to close out the season with a win. We've still had a pretty good season and have played beyond expectations.”
Crystal Lake Central got its winning goal on Staci Wolfgran's penalty kick in the 74th minute.
The Rams begin play in the state tournament by hosting CICS Northtown at 4:30 p.m. in a Class 2A regional.
