Grayslake N. wins 1st matchup with Stevenson

Stevenson and Grayslake North met on the softball field for the first time ever Friday.

They might have to play each other more often after host Grayslake North won 4-3 in what Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs called a well-played game.

Kayla Switalla’s RBI single with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning won the nonconference game.

Maddie Terlap went 2-for-3 for the Knights, while Nikki Livengood had a double and 2 RBI.

Stevenson (13-12) got a pair of doubles from Lexi Yonkovic, who scored twice, walked and drove in a run. Abby O’Connor went 3-for-4 for the Patriots, who stranded 12 runners, including three in both the third and eighth innings.

Carmel 18, Highland Park 3: Jenny Behan homered and knocked in 3 runs, and Claire Petrus was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, as the Corsairs coasted in the nonconference game.

Carmel (18-7) received 2 hits apiece from Sarah Koesser, Sam Melillo, Amanda Elert (double), Abby Andrejek (4 RBI), Dani Delozier (double) and Kathleen Felicelli.

Starting pitcher Nicole Bitter struck out five and allowed 1 hit in 2 innings for the win.

Mundelein 3, Vernon Hills 1: The Mustangs scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the North Suburban Conference crossover.

Winning pitcher Erin Kennelly struck out three and allowed 4 hits, as Mundelein improved to 22-7.

Vernon Hills (5-12) got a single and an RBI from Steffany Froman.
