Guest conductor to lead ESO in ‘Lark Ascending’

Submitted by Elgin Symphony Orchestra

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra closes its season with “The Lark Ascending” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5 at the Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way in Elgin. The guest conductor will be Andrew Grams.

The final concert weekend of the season finds another collection of great works paired with great performers. The ESO’s own concertmaster, Isabella Lippi, will solo on Vaughan Williams’ “The Lark Ascending.” Finally, the orchestra concludes the season’s program with Shostakovich’s searing depiction of life in Stalin’s Soviet Union — terror combined with man’s resilience and his own ascent to hope once again — in Symphony No. 10 in E minor. Mussorgsky’s Introduction (“Dawn on the Moscow River”) from “Khovanchina” also will be featured.

Tickets start at $28. Tickets can be purchased through the ESO box office, (847) 888-4000 or by visiting www.elginsymphony.org.

This will be the final concert weekend for the ESO’s current season. The 2013-14 season, “Transformed by Music,” will open in October.
