Fremd passes up Schaumburg

Senior Mandi Matsumoto led off with a base hit in the bottom of the first inning and eventually scored on passed ball.

That proved to be the only run Fremd’s softball team would need as Ashlynne Schwantz (6 innings) and Joanna Josten (1 inning) combined for a 7-0 shutout over visiting Schaumburg (10-2, 4-1) on Thursday.

Schwantz (6-3) struck out two and allowed 3 hits as the Vikes (7-6, 2-1) handed the Saxons (10-2, 4-1) their first loss in the Mid-Suburban League.

Tracy Welninski belted a 2-run homer in the third inning for Fremd, which received multiple hits from Matsumoto (2-for-4), Ashlynne Schwantz (2-for-2) and Michelle Mazur (2-for-3, 2 RBI double).

It was Welninski’s third homer of the season.

Elk Grove 7, Hersey 1: Elk Grove (13-4, 4-3) was led on offense by Shannon Taucher (2-for-3), Brianna Leach (2-for-4, double), Becca Maher (2-for-4, 2-for-4, 4 RBI), Marjorie Sloan (2-for-3) and Melissa Picchi (2-for-3) as Megan Eul (6-2) pitched the first five innings to earn the win.

Brianna De Silvia (3-1) did not give up a run in the final two innings.

Maher had a pair of 2-run singles for the Grens, who have won four straight in the MSL.

Alysia Zaucha went 2-fo-r4 for the host Huskies (3-7, 1-4), who used pitchers Michele Bolker (3 innings) and Rachel Fang (final 4 innings).

Buffalo Grove 16, Wheeling 0 (5 inn): Julia Camardo (8-4) threw a no-hitter with 6 strikeouts as visiting Buffalo Grove improved to 9-5 and 4-2 in the Mid-Suburban East while Wheeling stands at 5-8 and 0-5.

Top hitters for the Bison were Erin Barton (2-for-3, double), Amanda Salzman (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Katie Conley (1-for-3, double, RBI), Megan Fu (3-for-4, double, 3 RBI) and Caitlin Catino (3-for-4, triple, RBI).

Rolling Meadows 5, Hoffman Estates 1: Lane Winkler (2-for-4, 2 doubles) and Emily Hattory (2-for-4, double) led Rolling Meadows (7-7, 1-5) as senior Sara Brunlieb earned the win with 3 strikeouts.

Sam Acosta (3-for-3, walk) tripled for the host Hawks (2-7, 2-3) who also had an RBI single by Kaileen Hendle.

Palatine 9, Prospect 6: Dom Boisvert (1-1) pitched the first four innings to earn the win for Palatine (7-5, 3-1) while Megan Hedstrom (6-4) went the final three.

Courtney English, Tori Walzak and Jules Udoni had doubles for the Pirates while Jamie Haze tripled.

Megan Pancini and Michele Molini (double) each went 2-for-4 for Prospect (3-9, 1-3) while teammate Casey Lenski was 1-for-2 with a walk.

Nazareth sweeps St. Viator: The Lions (3-13) fell to 11-3 and 5-0 to the visiting Roadrunners. In Game 1, Gina Mastrodomenico tripled for Viator while teammates Michelle Presslak and Taylor Noll doubled.
