Des Plaines warns of flood repair fraud

Des Plaines police are warning residents dealing with flood damage to beware of home repair fraud. Signs have started popping up all over town from companies offering repair services in areas hardest hit by last week’s flooding, though it’s unclear which companies are licensed to do work in Des Plaines.

Police are warning residents to be wary of people representing themselves as “flood damage specialists or repairers” who may approach them in person, on the phone, or post their business information on lawn signs in flood-damaged neighborhoods. Residents are asked to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly, who might be vulnerable to possible scams. Suspicious companies or activities should be reported to the Des Plaines Police Department by calling 9-1-1.

To protect from home repair fraud, residents may verify the contractor’s credentials through websites, such as the Better Business Bureau, or by contacting the city’s Building Department, (847) 391-5380. Thus far, there haven’t been any reports of home repair fraud, officials said.
