West Chicago Public Library District to Celebrate "El Día de los Niños"

This month, the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) celebrates the 17th anniversary of El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children's Day/BookDay), also known as Día. On Saturday, April 27, the West Chicago Public Library District will join hundreds of libraries from across the country in this multicultural celebration.

From 1:00 to 2:30 pm, children and their families will enjoy stories in Spanish and English, games, crafts such as puppet and book making, and a cupcake making demonstration by Casita del Pan (formerly Cortez Bakery). Cupcakes will then be decorated to each child's specifications, and every child will leave with their cupcake and a free Spanish book.

“The strength of our Library is the diversity of our collections and our commitment to serving people of diverse backgrounds,” says Administrative Librarian Melody E. Coleman. “Día is a celebration of children, families, and reading, and emphasizes the importance of advocating literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Through literacy events and programs like Día, the West Chicago Public Library District works with parents and caregivers to raise avid readers.”
