Aurora claims victory in ‘Battle of the Burbs’

Aurora finished “Second to None” in the Suburban Madness Battle of the Burbs contest ran by The Eric and Kathy Morning Show on 101.9 FM — The Mix, winning a championship trophy and a celebration broadcast live on the radio.

During a victory party April 11, members of the morning show team presented a trophy to Mayor Tom Weisner in recognition of the city’s first-place finish in the annual contest, in which suburban cities and towns battle for online and text-message votes in a bracket competition.

Aurora beat 15 other towns to win the contest.

The City of Lights defeated Frankfort to advance to the Elite 8 and then outvoted Rolling Meadows to enter into the Final 4. Aurora narrowly beat Schererville, Ind., in the semifinals, claiming 50.3 percent of the vote.

In the championship round against Lemont, Aurora voters clinched the title by texting and clicking 62 percent of the votes during an hourlong contest held April 9.

During an interview on The Eric and Kathy Morning Show, Weisner expressed his gratitude to the community and his delight in welcoming the radio show’s team to Aurora.

The Mix broadcast segments of the trophy presentation celebration in the Paramount Theatre’s Grand Gallery as city officials, Aurora residents and high school bands, cheerleaders, drill teams and pep squads cheered the victory.
