Two hurt in Crystal Lake four-car crash

Two people were injured — one critically — in a four-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in Crystal Lake, authorities said.

Police said the crash occurred just before 3 p.m. at the intersection of routes 31 and 176. Three cars had come to a stop in the inner northbound lane of Route 31 due to traffic congestion when a fourth vehicle collided with the car in back, causing a chain reaction.

Two drivers were transported to Centegra-Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry; one was in critical condition and the other had injuries not considered life-threatening, authorities said.

Traffic was diverted for about an hour during the emergency response and accident investigation, police said.

No citations have been issued.
