Palatine firefighters rescue girl from blaze

Palatine firefighters responding to an apartment fire last night on the 400 block of West Palatine Road learned upon arrival that a girl was trapped in the apartment. Firefighters were able to locate the 13-year-old in the apartment’s bathroom and she was taken to a nearby hospital. Full story.

Mulder leads last meeting as Arlington Heights mayor

Retiring Mayor Arlene Mulder wore the same red suit presiding over her last village board meeting last night that she wore on her first day in office 20 years ago. Although that outfit stayed the same, most other things about Arlington Heights have changed in the two decades Mulder spent as village president and the 34 years she spent in public service, as her trustees and residents reminded her during an hourlong tribute. McHenry County sheriff’s office catches Top 10 fugitive

One of McHenry County’s top 10 fugitives was caught in the Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee. Kostas Lymberopoulus, 25, of the 1400 block of Cordgrass Trail in Woodstock fled in March after being charged with delivery of controlled substance — a violation of his probation. Full story.

Dist. 203 also rejects online charter school

Naperville Unit District 203 unanimously voted last night against a petition to participate in a virtual charter school in the coming school year. The Virtual Charter School @ Fox River Valley was proposed by St. Charles-based Virtual Learning Solutions. Many of the 18 districts it hoped to bring on board have already voted down the collaboration. Full story.

Judge vacates guilty plea because of former Schaumburg cop

Cook County Judge Kay Hanlon yesterday vacated an Elk Grove Village man’s 2012 guilty plea to drug charges and his six-year sentence after defense attorneys called into question the credibility of the arresting Schaumburg police officer, who is now facing drug charges of his own. Hanlon also ordered the $50,000 bail for Victor Alvarado, 29, to stand — meaning he should be released within a day or two from prison. Full story.

Traffic

US route 41/Skokie Highway is closed between IL Route 22/Half Day Road and Old Elm Road due to accident near Bannockburn. Rescue and police are on the scene, and traffic is being diverted off Route 41. People are urged to seek an alternate route. Full story.

Shaw leads Blackhawks to victory

Andrew Shaw scored the winning goal and had an assist in last night’s 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars at the United Center. The Blackhawks are now 33-5-4. Full story.
