Logan giving Palatine a leadoff lift

Last season, Lauren Logan was an all-area catcher who batted No. 3 in the Palatine batting order.

But Palatine veteran softball coach Jeff Manz had an eye on Logan’s eye.

“The reason we moved her to our leadoff hitter was because she has such a good eye,” Manz said. “And she is the best contact hitter we have. When she gets on base, good things happen.”

Logan, who has committed to Missouri-St. Louis, played her leadoff role to perfection on Saturday at The Ballpark at Rosemont.

The left-handed hitting senior went 4-for-4 with 2 runs and an RBI as the Pirates topped Leyden 9-7.

“We’ve been struggling so it was nice to come out with a win,” Logan said. “We had a lot of big plays when we needed them and Megan’s (Hedstrom) pitching was huge.”

The game was tied at 5-5 and Leyden had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the third inning when Manz called on Megan Hedstrom to try and get the final out in relief of Dom Boisvert.

The senior came though by getting a flyout to left fielder Maddie Levecke.

Palatine (3-4) then took the lead for good in the fourth when Grace Rohrwasser, Logan and Jamie Haze all singled, and Hedstrom had a sacrifice fly to left to score Tori Walzak.

The Pirates added 2 more runs in the top of the fifth as Jules Udoni and Levecke each scored for a 9-5 lead.

Back to back one-out doubles by Jessicsa Potts and pitcher Sammi Caputo led to 2 runs for the Eagles (1-5) in the bottom of the fifth.

Potts had 2 doubles in the game while teammate MacKenzie LeDuc tripled. Leyden leadoff batter Kelly Bjorvik walked her first three trips to the plate.

“I told the girls how important it was to get those 2 insurance runs (making the score 9-5),” Manz said. “That was huge. I thought we did a good all day manufacturing runs.”

The Pirates dropped their first game of the quad 8-3 to Damonte Ranch (Nev). Walzak was 2-for-3 in that game while Rohrwasser had a double.

Rolling Meadows 15, Highland Park 0 (5 inn): Winning pitcher Hannah Whidden (1-0) threw a 1-hitter with 4 strikeouts and went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double as the visiting Mustangs improved to 4-2.

Herdegen had the hot bat in Game 2, too, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a home run.

Antioch sweeps Prospect: Host Antioch won 2-1 and 6-4, and scored the winning run in Game 1 in top of the seventh.

Jill Sadowski went all seven innings for the Knights (1-6), striking out three and tossing a 7-hitter. Meghan Doyle had 2 hits to lead the Prospect offense.

“We didn’t really play badly enough to lose a doubleheader, but we didn’t play well enough to

win one either,” said Prospect coach Jim Adair. “We had lots of great opportunities where we needed two more hits to break either of these games wide open. Antioch is good team. They don’t give you much and their hitters can put your defense in some bad situations.”

In Game 2, Prospect scored 3 runs when Emma Riordan singled, Rachel Trebswether walked and Michele Molini singled. Casey Lenski singled home Riordan before Trebswether scored on Cassie Poulos’ fielder’s choice. Doyle’s single brought home Lenski.

“Jill Sadowski and Casey Lenski pitched great,” Adair added. “But we’ve got to be smarter on defense. I’m disappointed that we’re not winning these types of games but I’m encouraged that the kids are making the defensive plays that we didn’t make last year. “What really hurt us today was the lack of any extra base hits. I told the girls they have no idea yet how good they really are. I can’t wait until we start driving the ball all over the yard.”

Elk Grove, Loyola split: Elk Grove senior Rylee Romano outdueled Loyola ace Jamie Keifer for a 2-1 victory in Game 1 before the host Ramblers bounced back for an 8-5 victory in Game 2.

Maher (3-for-5) and Brianna Leach (3-for-4) led the Grens offense in Game 2.
