Triphahn Center gym reopens in Hoffman Estates
After being closed for more than two months, the gym at the Triphahn Community Center in Hoffman Estates reopened Friday.
Hoffman Estates Park District Executive Director Dean Bostrom said the flat rubber roof of the gym was damaged during a hailstorm in 2012 without the district realizing it at first. He said hundreds of pock marks from the hail thinned the surface of the ceiling and a heavy freeze in January caused them to crack.
The gym was shut down Jan. 25 and more than 500 events were relocated to other facilities, Bostrom said. There were also close to 90 cancellations of various programming in the gym, such as youth basketball.
Bostrom said on sunny and dry days when there wasn’t a risk for the floor getting wet, some supervised programs were held in the gym.
The park district had a damage claim processed through a risk management pool it is part of with more than 100 park districts, Bostrom said. The work was completed after the park district paid a $1,000 deductible.
“Everything’s back to normal,” Bostrom said Friday.
