Spring Valley Nature Center benefits from generous Garden Club donation

The Schaumburg Community Garden Club donated $4,150 to Spring Valley Nature Center and Heritage Farm, Schaumburg Park District’s 135-acre living nature museum, at the March 14 Park Board meeting. Garden Club President Jan Doud presented a check to Park Board President Bob Schmidt and Dave Brooks, manager of conservation services for the district.

Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, has many plans for the generous donation. The majority of the funds will benefit the Mighty Acorns youth stewardship education program, which helps to provide plant material and hand tools to kids planting native plants on field trips. Additional funds will go toward the installation of a rainwater cistern at Spring Valley’s maintenance building. The storage tank will be used to harvest rainwater flowing off the building’s roof which will water native plants grown in the adjacent greenhouse.

A smaller portion will assist with expenses from the May 5 Backyards for Nature Fair and Native Plant Sale, an annual event featuring a plant sale, gardening information, activities for children, free wildflower seedlings and birdhouse building.

“The active and growing club has been successful in raising funds every year at the annual plant sale,” said Brooks. “Since the club’s funds and efforts always benefit the community, new gardens have been planted at the Schaumburg Township building, native gardens have been established at area schools and the food pantry has received hundreds of pounds of fresh vegetables.”

The Garden Club also has supported Spring Valley the past 15 years by donating over $25,000 to assist with the installations of display gardens and a rain garden demonstration, purchase greenhouse and audiovisual equipment, and support the Mighty Acorns program.

“We can’t thank them enough for their continued dedication to Spring Valley,” Brooks said.
