Screams scare off cowboy hat-wearing intruder

A woman's screams early Sunday morning scared off a man wearing a cowboy hat who had broken into her apartment in an unincorporated area near Des Plaines, Cook County sheriff's officers said.

The woman awoke about 4:45 a.m. Sunday after hearing a noise in her bedroom in an apartment building on the 9000 block of Kennedy Drive.

She began screaming, awaking her roommate in another room, who then called 911.

The intruder, who had apparently entered through a window, fled out the apartment's door.

Described as a white man, the intruder is 30 to 40 years old, 5-feet-10 inches to 6 feet tall and clean shaven. He was wearing a white jacket and white shoes, in addition to a white cowboy hat.

A search of the area did not turn up any additional information, police said.

Sheriff Thomas Dart reminds people to keep windows and doors locked. Other safety tips include keeping a charged cellphone near the bed, as well as an air horn to scare intruders.

“The women did the right thing by calling 9-1-1 quickly,” Dart said in a release.
