It's a win-win scenario for Antioch

Antioch's softball team won its season opener for the first time in four years and added another victory Saturday.

Returning all-area senior Katie Phillips picked up the win in both games against Class 4A opponents, as Antioch defeated Lincoln-Way Central 4-3 and then host Jacobs 6-4 in the District 300 invitational in Algonquin.

"For our first time out, it was excellent," Sequoits coach Anthony Rocco said.

Mackenzie Thomas tripled and scored on a throwing error on the same play, as Antioch built a 4-1 lead after two innings against Lincoln-Way Central. Phillips aided her own cause with a double and an RBI, while Hannah Skoog went 2-for-2. Taylor Schiltz had a single and 2 RBI.

Phillips struck out six, walked two and allowed 2 earned runs in a complete-game effort.

She posted the identical pitching line (6 strikeouts, 2 walks and 2 earned runs) against Jacobs and added an RBI double.

Kaylene Ressler paced Antioch's 12-hit attack by going 3-for-3 and scoring 3 runs. Kaytee Keefe was 2-for-4 with a double. Jessica Tyrell went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI, Sage Keyes knocked in 2 runs, Schiltz doubled and freshman Sam Beltran delivered a pinch-hit RBI base hit.

Mundelein wins two: Mundelein won its first two games of the season: 7-3 over Prospect and 6-2 over Palatine. Against Prospect, the Mustangs rolled up 12 hits, thanks in part to 3 hits by Maggie Mahar and 3 hits by Hannah Bulgart, whose total included a double. Hailey Morelli blasted a triple while Abbey Rosenow added 2 hits. Molly Ellett got the pitching win. She finished with 6 strikeouts. Against Palatine, Maria DeVito led the way with 2 hits while pitcher Erin Kennelly got the win.
