Car chase ends with crash into Elk Grove school

A driver suspected in a Hanover Park hit-and-run was involved in a chase with Roselle police late Wednesday night that ended up with the vehicle crashing into an Elk Grove Village school, police said.

No one but the driver was injured when the vehicle plowed into a classroom at Grove Junior High, 777 Elk Grove Blvd., around midnight Wednesday. Students at Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 are on spring break this week, authorities said.

A District 59 spokesman could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

“No other parties were injured at all,” Roselle Police Sgt. John Lawson said Thursday. “There was nobody in the school.”

The driver suffered injuries that are not life-threatening and was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village for treatment, where she remained Thursday afternoon, Lawson said.

Charges are pending against the driver and are being reviewed by the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, Lawson said.

Lawson said Roselle police got involved after receiving a call at about 10:43 p.m. Wednesday that Hanover Park police was looking for a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run that was last seen traveling in the area of Central and Gary avenues in Roselle.

“One of our officers sees the vehicle exit the eastbound Elgin-O’Hare Expressway onto northbound Roselle Road. He noticed front-end damage and it matched the description of the car Hanover Park was looking for,” Lawson said. “The car struck the guardrail at Roselle Road and the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway.”

The officer tried to pull over the vehicle, which accelerated. The driver tried to elude the officer, who caught up with the vehicle when it crashed into Grove school, Lawson said.

Hanover Park police did not immediately respond to a request for information about the first accident.
