One killed in fiery I-88 semi-SUV crash

A female driver of an SUV was killed Tuesday evening when a semitrailer truck and tractor crossed through the median on Interstate 88 and struck her head-on, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

The crash happened at about 7:14 p.m. near the Route 56 exit by Sugar Grove.

A semitrailer truck traveling east at mile marker 113 lost control, crossing the grassy median and striking a 2010 Jeep traveling west, police said.

The driver of the semi was not seriously injured and was cooperating with police, said Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Greg Minx.

All westbound lanes remained closed as late as 12:30 a.m. while police continued to investigate.

The name of the deceased driver is being withheld, pending notification to next of kin.
