North Chicago officer suspected in fatal crash

Authorities have arrested a North Chicago police officer suspected of driving the wrong way on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive and causing a crash that killed two people.

The North Chicago Police Department has relieved the officer of his police powers and placed him on administrative leave. He has not been charged.

The officer, who was off-duty at the time, was injured in the crash and is in serious condition at Advocate Illinois Masonic Center.

Friday’s crash shut down the busy roadway for five hours.

North Chicago Police Chief James Jackson says his department has “no tolerance for officers whose actions fall outside” the laws they are asked to enforce.
