Author, H.M. "Gramps" Bricker revisits Allendale School for kids in Lake Villa

Author, Howard M. “Gramps” Bricker read his book, The Christmas Santa Had No Beard at the Allendale School during the 2012 holiday season. Bricker's Christmas story captivated the attention of these students. Jamie Guardarrama, who coordinates activities for Allendale, was excited to have the author for a return visit this week to speak to all the students. The subject this time was about the early life of Jean Baptiste Point du Sable from the time he was 10 years old to when he built what is now Chicago. . Bricker pointed out to the students that became educated in France learning French, Spanish and English. When he became 17, his father had enough confidence in Jean to provide him with a ship to commandeer across the Atlantic Ocean to New Orleans.

“The difficult questions these kids asked me afterwards were challenging and thoughtful. The dedicated work that is done by the personnel at this school to prepare these young people for adulthood is astounding,” Bricker said. It should be remembered that this facility is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to provide education, and proper emotional and behavioral treatment to more than 1,200 troubled and abused children, adolescents and families.

The author known as “Gramps” was amazed that the Allendale Association established in 1897 was able continue to exist so long on such a high standard existing solely on charitable donations. For further information or to donate visit www.allendale4kids.org or call 847 356 2351
