Endorsement: Lucassen for Round Lake Park village president

Round Lake Park residents face a very tough choice for village president in the April 9 election, and their decision may hinge on something as arguable as whether the best alternative for advancing the village in new directions is someone who has been steeped in its affairs for more than a decade and a half or someone who brings an almost entirely fresh perspective. For our part, we side with experience and Trustee Linda Lucassen. Lucassen is in the middle of her first term on the village board after being elected in 2011, and before that she served 14 years as village clerk. She knows the ins and outs of local government well and can speak authoritatively on everything from the status of the budget to ways the village can reach out to communicate better with all segments of the Round Lake Park community. Among other activities, she has worked to produce and promote local festivals, helped with Meals on Wheels and participated in local fundraisers. Her opponent, Kathleen Pender, is likewise sincerely committed to the quality of life in Round Lake Park, with a long resume of work with service groups as well as past service on the village board. Both candidates know the village has a lot of work still to do to encourage business development in town and to gain more stability in local finances, but Lucassen's more recent and deeper involvement in municipal affairs gives her a valuable head start.
