Blaze badly damages Lombard home
An attached garage caught fire in Lombard Tuesday evening causing $200,000 damage to the structure.
Lombard Fire Department responded to the call at 6:55 p.m. at the home in the 1100 block of South Ahrens and arrived to a fully involved garage fire that was extending into the house, said Lombard Batallion Chief Marty Coomes.
Two occupants — a mother and a son — were able to escape unharmed. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control within 10 minutes.
“It extended into the attic, and they got in the house and were able to stop it from going any further,” Coomes said. “The guys did a great job. They put a stop on that thing pretty quick.”
Lombard, York Center, Addison and Carol Stream firefighters assisted, while firefighters from Lisle, Oakbrook Terrace and Glenside provided backup in Lombard.
The home was deemed uninhabitable, although much of it sustained only smoke damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
