Schaumburg library offers social media classes

Do you tweet, post, blog or pin? Do you know there are apps to help you plan a trip? Whether these terms are foreign or familiar, you can learn more about them by turning to the Schaumburg Township District Library. Our 90-minute classes will help take the mystery out of social media. From Facebook to Pinterest to Twitter and Tumblr, you will learn how to connect with friends, family and business prospects, and even meet new people with interests similar to your own.

Using social media can expand your circle of friends or facilitate a career change. It can help you find relatives worldwide, discover exciting travel destinations, delicious recipes, fun hobbies or new skills. Where do you start? The answer is simple. Just register for one of these upcoming classes by calling (847) 923-3347.

“Pinterest for Beginners” will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Adult Classroom. The Pinterest website describes this form of social media as “a tool for collecting and organizing things you love.” With it, you can create a wishlist, plan a trip, organize an event, start a collection or plan a project. Once you join, you can start “pinning,” which involves finding an image or video that you like. Once you pin it to your Pinterest account, it can be “repinned,” (shared) by others who like it, too. Find out more by attending the class.

“Goodreads for Beginners” is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the Adult Computer Lab. Come and learn about this free website for book lovers. Attending the class will get you started with setting up an account. From there you will get insightful recommendations for book titles based on the titles and genres you’ve enjoyed in the past. You can also engage in discussions about your favorite and least favorite titles.

“Blogging for Beginners” will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Adult Classroom. A blog can take many shapes and forms, depending on its author. From a personal diary to a daily pulpit or a political soapbox, a blog reflects the writer’s views and can be added to as often, or as seldom, as you determine. Participants will learn the basics of creating a blog and get an overview of popular blogging websites including Blogger, Wordpress and Tumblr.

“Useful Apps for Travelers” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the Adult Classroom. Attend this class to discover some of the best (free or inexpensive) apps to help make the most of your vacation. Apps that are compatible with Apple and Android devices will be discussed. If you are attending this class, be sure to bring your smartphone or tablet.

The library consistently offers social media classes, so if you don’t find what you are looking for in the aforementioned classes, peruse the full listing in the Program Guide which is mailed to Schaumburg Township residents and available at www.schaumburglibrary.org.
