Downstate man faces sentencing in sex attacks on 2 toddlers

EDWARDSVILLE — Prosecutors plan to seek a life prison term for a man facing sentencing on convictions related to sexual attacks on two toddlers in southwestern Illinois.

Thirty-year-old Michael Burgund of Alton is to be sentenced Friday in Madison County. That’s where a jury convicted him in December of six counts of predatory criminal sexual assault.

Burgund was charged in April 2011 after going to Alton police and admitting he sexually assaulted two toddlers beginning in June 2008. The victims at the time were 2 and 3 years old.

Burgund testified during his trial and denied the allegations.

Burgund remains jailed in Edwardsville.
