Selective Service an unneeded relic

When President Nixon terminated the draft, he failed to dissolve the Selective Service Administration. Even though there is no longer a draft, males upon reaching the age of 18 still have to register with the SSA. Women were exempt from the draft when there was a draft, and still today they do not have to register upon reaching the age of 18. It’s not fair and it’s not equal.

The military has stated many times that they don’t want a draft. So what should be done? Congress and President Obama should simply finish Nixon’s job and put an end to the Selective Service Administration and with it the millions of dollars that our government wastes each year on this unneeded program. Perhaps one of Illinois’ representatives in the Congress will draft a bill to shutter the SSA before some other representative submits a bill to expand the SSA so it can begin registering women. This would be a fine tribute to the women in our military who have seen a lot of combat already.
