Man on ATV falls through ice in Antioch

A man riding his ATV on a lake in Antioch fell through thin ice and had to be rescued Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Rescue crews were called to Lake Marie at 1:05 p.m. to find the victim, described as a man in his 30s, clinging to his ATV and up to his chest in water about 50 feet from the shoreline, according to Chief John Nixon of the Antioch Fire Department.

Two rescuers walked out onto the ice and eventually went into the water with a tether line to secure the man and bring him to shore, Nixon said.

The rescue took about 30 minutes.

“It’s dangerous to assume the lake is all good in all places,” Nixon said. “The area was melted and he ran his ATV across it, and kerplunk.”

The man was taken to Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry for evaluation and treatment of hypothermia.
