Libraries across the suburbs have evolved in recent years to stay relevant in an increasingly digital age. Many have incorporated sophisticated new technology that allows users to create digital content. Arlington Heights board to receive housing plan
After nearly a year of research and analysis, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning will present today its final plan and recommendations for what housing in the Northwest suburbs should look like in the future. The Arlington Heights village board will be the first of the five member suburbs of the Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative to hear the recommendations. Full story.
Fire alliance providing benefits to four DuPage towns
Nearly a year after its debut, an alliance of firefighting agencies in DuPage County is lauding improvements in its responses to emergencies and outlining more ways to share resources. The West Suburban Fire/Rescue Alliance includes the Wheaton Fire Department and fire protection districts of Carol Stream, Winfield and West Chicago. “It used to be we had to assign people to everything they did,” West Chicago Chief Robert Hodge said. “Now, it's seamless.” Full story.
District 211 to buy thousands of students iPads
After reviewing the many positive impacts iPads are having on instructors and students, the Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 school board has agreed to allow for the expansion of the district's one-on-one program, which put iPads in the hands of 1,500 students last fall. That means between 6,000 and 7,000 additional students will get their own iPad to use next school year. Full story.
Ill. EPA finds no problems at Wheeling auto auction site
Barrington Hills Village President Robert Abboud said he was so disgusted with conditions he found at Insurance Auto Auctions' Wheeling site he shot photos and videos of what he saw, then filed a complaint with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. After an investigation, the IEPA said this week there were no significant issues at the Wheeling site. Full story.
Rescued puppies groomed for new suburban homes
A little Jack Russell terrier named Lover Boy was one of 34 dogs slated to be euthanized this week in Kentucky. But he is now safe in a suburban home, thanks to the Rescue Warriors Corp, which brought the dogs Thursday night to an Elk Grove Village groomer, after which they will be put up for adoption. Car plunges into basement of Streamwood home
A car careened through the cement block basement wall of a Streamwood home Saturday, ending up entirely in the basement. There were no injuries and after it was carefully extracted, village officials ruled the house remained safe for occupancy. Full story
Palatine woman's death ruled accident
The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled the death of a 77-year-old Palatine woman struck by an automobile earlier in the week was accidental, according to a report released Saturday. Jieru Chen died Thursday from injuries suffered when a car backed into her in a parking lot on the 400 block of Hicks Road. Full story.
Last of Kane County red-light cameras on way out
When the calendar marks March 9, Kane County's highway system will be officially free of all red-light cameras. The date marks at least a temporary end to one of the more controversial safety enforcement mechanisms in the county. The only two red-light cameras the county oversees are both along Randall Road in Geneva. One is at the intersection of Williamsburg Avenue. The other is at the intersection with Fargo Boulevard. Westmont woman charged in husband's slaying
A Westmont woman has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of her husband, the DuPage County State's Attorney announced Sunday. Lisa Davis, 42, of the 500 block of West 61st Street, faces one count of first-degree murder alleging she killed David Davis, 49, during an altercation Friday night. Full story.
