Smart Farm of Barrington Announces First Two Workshops of the Year.

Gardening 101: Where to Begin. The first Smart Farm workshop of 2013, will be held Saturday, March 9 at 10:00 am. The class will take place at Smart Farm's new hoop house located on the Good Shepherd Hospital Campus in Barrington. As always, there is no charge for Smart Farm's workshops but registration at www.smartsfarms.org is requested.

Have you always wanted a garden but didn't know where to start? This is the class for you. We will be starting from the beginning, the "where" and moving into the "what". Which vegetables do best in our area and which are best for you. Then on to the "when" to cover at what time in the season each type of vegetable should be planted. Next we cover the "how" from basic seed starting, to transplanting to harvesting.

Starting vegetables from seed is not hard, saves money and is very rewarding to watch that seed mature into dinner! We will go over the basics of seed starting from where to get the seeds, to how much to grow, to watering and lighting, and equipment needed. Transplanting will also be discussed. We will be planting seeds so prepare for dirty hands!
