U-46 to host Special Needs Parent Resource Fair

The Citizens’ Advisory Council and the U-46 Special Education Department are offering a free Special Needs Parent Resource Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 2, at Elgin High School, 1200 Maroon Drive, in Elgin.

The event is an opportunity for families to learn about the services and programs that local, regional, and state agencies provide for our special needs community. The event is open to the public and for all those with an interest in special needs services.

Programming will include discussion panels hosted by local service providers and by District U-46. The Autism Society of Illinois will lead a discussion with other experts in the field of autism at 10:15 a.m. Ray Graham Association, AID and the Illinois DHS Office of Rehabilitation Services will host a panel on respite care options at 11:15 a.m. Two presentations on high school/post-secondary transition programs will be held at 9:15 a.m. and at 12:15 p.m.

More than 40 nonprofit service agencies will be in attendance to distribute information and meet with parents. They include Easter Seals, UPS for DownS, The Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, Shriners Hospitals for Children Chicago, DayOneNetwork, Kaitlin’s Hideout, Kane County Department of Employment and Education, and Illinois Life Span Project, along with representatives from local library and recreation staff.
