Get up early to see the groundhog

Groundhog Day, which falls every year on Feb. 2, will be celebrated this weekend in a few locations in the Chicago area, with the biggest event taking place in Woodstock.

Here are the highlights:

Ÿ Woodstock kicked off its celebration with the traditional Groundhog Prognostication at 7 a.m. in the historic Woodstock Square.

The movie “Groundhog Day” will be shown at Woodstock Theatre at 10 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 2 and Sunday Feb. 3. Walking tours of the movie's filming sites start at the Woodstock Opera House at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, and 12:30 p.m. Sunday. Both the movie and walking tours are free.

Also on Saturday, Jim May's Groundhog Tales takes place at 10 a.m. in the community room of Home State Bank, 124 S. Johnson St., and a chili cook-off starts at noon at the Woodstock Opera House, 121 E. Van Buren St.

Ÿ Groundhog Day-themed crafts and activities for kids will take place all day Saturday in the Hamill Family Play Zoo, inside Brookfield Zoo, 8400 West 31st St. in Brookfield. Brookfield Zoo will offer free admission on Saturday. Parking is $10. The zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.., buildings close at 4:30 p.m. A heated shuttle bus is available inside the zoo to take people from exhibit to exhibit. For more information call (708) 688-8000.

Ÿ Children can crawl through a tunnel and make pop-up groundhogs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the children's garden of Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53 in Lisle. Activities are contingent on the weather, the children's garden will be closed if temperatures are too cold. For more information call (630) 968-0074.
