Union endorses Hutchinson for congressional seat

Former state Rep. Toi Hutchinson has received a labor endorsement in her bid to replace Jesse Jackson Jr. in the U.S. House.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees endorsed Hutchinson on Friday. Hutchinson is running in the Democratic primary for Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District seat. The labor union has more than 7,000 members in the district. It cited her efforts on behalf of the middle class.

The special primary election is Feb. 26. Jackson resigned the seat in November after winning re-election, citing ongoing health problems and acknowledging he’s under federal investigation.

Hutchinson also has the endorsement from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. On Wednesday, state Sen. Napoleon Harris dropped out of the race and threw his support to former state Rep. Robin Kelly.
