Elgin man charged with burglaries

By Elena Ferrarin

An Elgin man was charged recently with several counts of burglary and unlawful use of debit or credit cards he obtained while prowling at night for unlocked vehicles in the near west side of town, police said.

Charles L. McCammon, 46, of Jane Drive, was initially arrested Dec. 21 on a parole violation, Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said. Police then linked him to burglaries that took place in September and December.

McCammon was charged with burglary related to incidents that took place Sept. 2 in the 1800 block of Joseph Court, Dec. 13 in the 1000 block of West Chicago Street, Dec. 14 in the 200 block of Melrose Avenue, and Dec. 19 in the 120 block of South Alfred Avenue.

McCammon took cash and credit or debit cards from wallets and purses inside the vehicles, police said.

In the Dec. 14 incident, McCammon took a wallet containing about $180 in cash, and used a credit card at a fast food store in the 1400 block of Larkin Avenue, police said.

McCammon was also charged with purchasing about $22 worth of items using someone else's credit card on Dec. 5 at a grocery store in the 1600 block of Larkin Avenue, police said.

According to Kane County court records, McCammon has misdemeanor convictions for theft, retail theft, theft of lost or mislaid property and trespassing; and felony convictions for six burglaries and armed violence from cases that date back to 1992, according to court records.

McCammon has two 2012 felony cases pending in which he was charged with burglary, according to court records.
