Phone thief sent to prison
A Bolingbrook man who was on bond for robbery when he was charged with stealing another man’s cellphone pleaded guilty to the charges this week in a Rolling Meadows courtroom.
In exchange for Clifton M. Stump’s guilty pleas to the charges, a Cook County judge sentenced the 24-year-old to a total of six years in prison: four years for the robbery and two years for the theft. Stump must serve the sentences consecutively.
Stump was on bond for an August 2012 robbery in Arlington Heights when authorities say he approached a man in Hoffman Estates on Aug. 29 and asked to borrow his iPhone. The man gave the phone to Stump, who walked away without returning it, prosecutors said at Stump’s September bond hearing.
Stump then entered an apartment on the 500 block of Heritage Drive and closed the door behind him, locking out the man whose phone he took, prosecutors said.
The judge awarded Stump credit for the 189 days he has spent in custody and ordered him to pay $1,158 in fines.
He must complete at least 50 percent of each sentence before he is eligible for parole.
