Scouts Prepared for 2013 Fundraising Campaigns

Scouts and volunteers are prepared to continue to lay the foundation for a strong future with the 2013 Friends of Scouting Campaign to be held at Cantigny on Thursday, January 17th at the LeJardin Restaurant located at 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton, IL at 6:30 pm. Scouts will also begin their Camp Card fundraiser starting February 1st through April 1st. The Camp Card is a $5 coupon card that offers various value added coupon offers from local vendors such as Culver's, Microsoft Store in Oak Brook, Dunkin Donuts, SportsClips, Dairy Queen, Brunswick Zone, Arby's, Jiffy Lube, Burger King, Legoland, Plano Molding Outlet, Rosati's, Colonial Café, Medieval Times and Ralph's Car Wash. The Camp Cards sell for $5 each and offer coupons totaling over $75 worth of savings.

“Scouting remains strong in Three Fires Council with the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and Exploring program services being provided to over 25,000 youth with help from over 7,000 volunteers,” said Matt Ackerman, Scout Executive for the Three Fires Council.

Through the Friends of Scouting Campaign, the Boy Scouts of America, Three Fires Council spends approximately $150.00 per Scout each year to ensure high quality programs for all of its members. 100% of the funds raised stay local; 88.5% of the annual fund is spent directly on Scout programs and activities, while only 11.5% goes to fundraising and management.

The Friends of Scouting Campaign provides support for the operation and maintenance of camping properties: Camp Big Timber, Camp Freeland Leslie, and the partnership with the Scout Adventure Camp in Rochelle with Des Plaines Valley Council, the Scout Service Center in St. Charles that provides staff support to local units and leaders, two Scout shops, activities and events, adult leader training to ensure that every youth in the Council can have a quality trained leader, and paid accident and liability insurance coverage for all youth and adult leaders.

Scouts will also be out in their local neighborhoods and community selling Camp Cards. Each card is five dollars to purchase, and fifty percent of each sale is earned for Scouts to use towards day camps, resident summer camps, and needed equipment such as tents, backpacks and sleeping bags.

The Camp Card sale is also an opportunity for Scouts to learn important lessons in public speaking, entrepreneurship, marketing and salesmanship. Camp Card activities can also be applied to merit badge requirements or rank in advancement so that Scouts are furthering their achievements in Scouting.
