Authorities investigating body found north of Antioch

The search for a missing person ended Thursday morning with the discovery of a body north of Antioch, which the Lake County coroner's office has confirmed is a 42-year-old Antioch man.

Antioch Police Chief Craig Sommerville released a statement earlier Thursday that said the body found fit the description of the missing man, who ABC 7 reported is a Waukegan police officer. Sommerville said the body was discovered after a 120-man search team was deployed from Antioch.

Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd said in a news release that an autopsy revealed the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. When reached by phone Thursday night, Rudd would not comment further on the matter until the investigation is complete.

Earlier in the day, Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Sara Balmes confirmed that authorities were investigating the circumstances involving the body found in a seating area in the woods near North Avenue and Trevor Road.

"There was a multiagency search for a missing subject," Balmes said. The search began at 8 a.m. in the village, and the body was found at 9 a.m. in the unincorporated area to the north.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted a request for e temporary flight restrictions in the area where the body was found. Officials were not available to explain the decision.
