Geoffrey Carreiro of Geneva says he will run as a write-in for Geneva Township clerk after an electoral board removed him from the ballot Thursday.
The township electoral board ruled he did not have enough valid signatures on his petitions. He needed 156, but after several objections to signatures were sustained, he had only 152 valid signatures.
Township Trustee Robert Kovacs had objected to 19 of the 162 signatures on Carreiro's petitions. The board deemed 10 of the objections valid, including five because the voters lived in Blackberry Township and another because there was no registered voter by that name at the given address.
"At the end of the day, I just think it is unfortunate they go after people who want to get involved," Carreiro said after the hearing.
Nobody else is running for clerk.
Kovacs said he objected because he did not know Carreiro, and because Carreiro was unopposed, so he thought it would be better in that case for the township board to interview people and appoint a clerk.
