7 families displaced after Carol Stream apartment fire

Seven families were displaced after a fire caused damage to a Carol Stream apartment building Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Battalion Chief Joe Gilles said firefighters were dispatched to a fire at 631 Burns St. at 1:41 p.m. They arrived on the scene three minutes later, he said.

Police in the area reported heavy smoke coming from the two-story building, which is part of the Covered Bridges Apartments complex, Gilles said. Upon arrival, firefighters saw fire blowing out of the apartment windows, he said.

β€œThe fire alarm did alert everybody in the building and everybody evacuated on their own, which was great,” Gilles said, adding that there were no injuries.

Gilles said the fire was limited to two units β€” including one that was vacant β€” on the second floor of the eight-unit building. However, he said, four families would be displaced for Wednesday night and three more families would be displaced for an extended period of time.

The estimated amount of damages was around $250,000, Gilles said.

Firefighters from Wheaton, Glenside and West Chicago helped on the scene, while firefighters from the Winfield and Hanover Park Fire Departments answered calls while Carol Stream firefighters were on the scene, Gilles said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
