Woman who abandoned baby in Wheaton released
CHICAGO — An immigrant from Myanmar who left her son outside a Wheaton apartment building moments after his birth has been released from federal custody.
The Chicago Tribune reports Nunu Sung has been living in the Chicago area since mid-November.
She gave birth to her son in June 2009 outside the Wheaton apartment building and left the child under a bush. A neighbor found him after about 90 minutes.
Sung’s attorneys said she hid her pregnancy and secretly delivered the baby herself because in her homeland unwed mothers are shunned.
She pleaded guilty in October 2010 to obstructing justice for lying about her pregnancy. She was released in January, but was immediately taken into custody by immigration officials until a court ruled in October she could stay in the U.S.
