Stevenson opens Showcase with victory

Taylor Buford and Alex Elzinga each scored 12 points, and Stevenson’s girls basketball team opened the Suburban Holiday Showcase with a 54-30 win over Waukegan at Lake Zurich on Friday night.

Sophia Way added 10 points for the Patriots (9-4), who won their ninth game in a row.

The Patriots have a first-place showdown at Zion-Benton today.

Woodstock North 37, Lakes 35: At McHenry, Aleecia Braun sank a running shot in the lane with four seconds left, lifting the Thunder in the third-place game of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Braun, who sank 9 of 9 free throws, finished with a team-high 15 points.

Samantha Ahr added 10 points and 9 rebounds for Woodstock North, which led 35-33 before Lakes’ Heather Hurlbut tied the game by hitting a pair of free throws with 57 seconds left.

Hurlbut led all scorers with 18 points, going 8 of 8 from the stripe. The junior scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Eagles in the game.

“Heather played well,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. “She’s a good kid. Heather’s really stepped up. Heather is one of the kids that has mental toughness. She’s shown it on the floor.”

Crystal Lake South 51, Lakes 29: At McHenry, Sara Mickow scored a game-high 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, as the Gators advanced to the championship game of the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic.

Rachel Rasmussen added 8 points coming off the bench, while Carly Nolan had 10 rebounds.

Lakes was led in scoring by Heather Hurlbut with 7 points. Alexis Lee had 6 points on pair of 3-pointers.

Crystal Lake South led 8-5 after one quarter and slowly pulled away, extending its advantage to 19-10 by halftime and 39-16 after three.

Grayslake North 53, Woodstock North 39: At McHenry, Brittney Thibeaux scored 13 points, as the Knights won the opening game of the day to advance to the championship game.

Grayslake North also got 11 points from Jordyn Bowen and 10 from Kendall Detweiler. The Knight led 13-3 after one quarter and 27-12 at halftime.

McHenry 46, Wauconda 40: At Woodstock, the Bulldogs (4-11, 2-3) completed the Northern Illinois Holiday Classic with their second loss of the day.

Jessie Woods had 9 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals for Wauconda. Dani Sturm added 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Marian Central 47, Wauconda 32: At Woodstock, Lexie Redmann had 8 points for the Bulldogs.

Shannon Wuensch scored 16 points for Marian Central.
