Ill. Secretary of State targets illegal drinking

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Secretary of State Police officials have intensified enforcement of underage drinking in bars during the holiday break.

Secretary of State Jesse White says a recent check at bars at Division Street and Lincoln Avenue in Chicago netted 14 arrests of minors with fake identification cards.

Using fake IDs or those that belong to other people can result in a one-year driver’s license suspension, fines of as much as $25,000 and even jail time.

The Secretary of State Police administers the “Cops in Shops” program with undercover officers visiting liquor establishments year round.

The agency teams up with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Liquor Commission and other law enforcement teams.
