Investigators in Chicago are trying to figure out what caused a 38-year-old man to die after police twice shocked him with a stun gun.

Police said Phillip Coleman was arrested Wednesday on charges that accused him of beating his 69-year-old mother.

Officials said Coleman became combative Thursday as officers were trying to transport him to court and the officers used a stun gun to subdue him.

Coleman later was taken to Roseland Hospital, where officials said he became combative with hospital staff and was stunned again. Authorities said he was admitted to the hospital, and the medical staff gave him a sedative. He later died.

An autopsy is planned. The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the death.
