Aurora man struck, killed by truck near Sugar Grove

A 54-year-old Aurora man died Monday night after being struck by a pickup truck while walking along Jericho Road near Sugar Grove.

A Toyota Tundra pickup truck driven by Joseph Morgan, 25, of Plano, was heading east on Jericho Road when he struck Dean F. Craig, 54, of Aurora, between Dugan and Ashe roads in unincorporated Sugar Grove Township.

Craig was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash happened on a stretch of country road with no sidewalks or lighting and a 55 mph speed limit.

Police say they’re unsure about the circumstances of the accident but don’t anticipate any charges.

“It’s dark out there. There’s nothing,” Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said. “It’s not like a city street with streetlights. The only thing out there would be the headlights of the vehicle.”

The driver, Morgan, was not injured.

“Once we’re able to talk to the driver of the truck, we’ll have a much better idea,” Gengler said. “He’s a younger kid, and he’s pretty upset. We’ll have a better idea (Tuesday).”

The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the Kane County accident reconstruction team.

Jericho Road was closed between Ashe and Dugan roads for three hours during the investigation.
