Contest entries celebrate faraway places

Nope, this isnt a picture of Santa Claus. Its actually a resident of Zadar, Croatia, whom Roger Sudnick of West Chicago happened upon while on a recent vacation with his wife and friends.

Each week’s DuPage County Neighbor section includes at least one entry in our Photo Finish contest. Our photo staffers pick some of their favorite submissions to run each week and then one overall monthly winner.

This week’s entries largely play off our interest in travel.

Roger Sudnick of West Chicago, for example, was in Zadar, Croatia, when he captured his image of a man who bears a remarkable resemblance to Santa.

Carol Asselmeier of Glen Ellyn was in the Lyngor Fiord in Norway when she snapped her entry.

Jena Vivek of Naperville was much closer to home — around Downers Grove — but even her photo depicts travel in a fast-moving train. Check out her photo inside today’s Neighbor.

If you’d like to try your hand at submitting a photo of your own for consideration, email it in .jpg format with at least 300 dpi resolution to ssanders@dailyherald.com.

Include your name, address and phone number, plus a description of where you took the photo and the occasion.

The monthly winner will receive a $50 gift certificate, good at PJ’s Camera. Pickwick Place Plaza, 662 Roosevelt Road, Glen Ellyn.

Jena Vivek of Naperville took this long exposure of a Metra train near Downers Grove. I think the photo is very visually stunning and has lovely elements in it such as the trains headlamps light trail, the stars in the background, and the greenish glow, which emanates from the illuminated windows of a Metra train, she said.

Carol Asselmeier of Glen Ellyn took this photo while traveling with her mother in the Lyngor Fiord, Norway. We crossed by this boat going in the opposite direction and I had just a second or two to get the shot, she said. I love the dichotomy of the modern father shuttling his children in an ancient wooden boat.
