District 300 begins strike

Nearly 1,300 Community Unit District 300 teachers will take to the picket lines this morning on the first day of a teachers’ strike. Teachers declared the strike yesterday after 11 months of negotiations failed. It’s the district’s first strike since 1972. Full story.

Kaneland graduate a caring, reliable friend

Friends of a recent Kaneland gradate gathered yesterday at the scene where he died in a multivehicle accident to remember him as a caring, dependable friend and an excellent welder. Zachary Bingham was hit and killed by a woman driving a stolen car through Campton Hills. She also died. Full story.

District 33 declares impasse with teachers

The board of education in West Chicago Elementary School District 33 declared an impasse last night after 14 months of negotiations. The district’s 280 teachers have been working without a contract since Aug. 30. Both sides have two weeks to make a final offer public. Full story.

Huntley motorcyclist killed in crash

A Huntley motorcyclist who swerved to miss an animal lost control and died from injuries sustained in the crash. Police said that Keith R. Preble, 52, was driving a 2004 Yamaha Silverado eastbound on Del Webb Boulevard west of Sumer Ridge Lane at about 2:04 p.m. Saturday when he crashed. Preble was not wearing a helmet, police said. Gurnee police warn of car burglaries

Gurnee police released a warning yesterday to residents to lock their cars and stow valuables out of site after 14 cars have been burglarized since Thanksgiving. Seven burglaries took place in residential areas after dark in vehicles that were unlocked. The other seven had windows smashed to steal visible personal property. Full story.

Spa workers charged with prostitution

A sting in Carol Stream resulted in the arrest of two spa workers at Golden Spa, 1034 Fountain View Drive, on prostitution charges. Young O. Thornton, 41, of Arlington Heights, and Myong S. Lewis, 51, of Minnesota, were both charged with prostitution. Thornton faces additional charges. Full story.

Cubs sign analyst Deshaies

A new analyst will join Len Kasper in the WGN-TV booth: Jim Deshaies. The organization announced yesterday that the former Houston Astros pitcher who has worked as an analyst for the Astros since 1997 will join play-by-play man Kasper. Full story.
