Church dispute smacks of government meddling

Over the past few months I have been following articles in the paper about the clash between West Dundee and the First United Methodist Church over the matter of the parsonage the church owns.

A solution seems very elementary to me. If West Dundee wants to preserve the parsonage because it is in the historical district, why not buy the thing and be done with it, assuming the church would consider selling it?

It also seems to me that since the building belongs to the church, that they should have every right to level it and make more parking, if that parking is needed.

It just seems to me that a lawsuit is just going to cost everyone money, money that could be well spent elsewhere. And, this whole thing just smells like more government interfering in private business at the local level ... one thing there is way too much of at all levels of government.
