Peoria man convicted for stealing Christmas gifts

PEORIA — A Peoria man convicted of stealing Christmas presents from a family with seven children could get up to 30 years in prison.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that jurors deliberated for a few hours before finding 36-year-old Sherman Williams guilty of residential burglary.

Prosecutors say Williams and his three brothers kicked in the back door of a home on Dec. 20 and stole two TVs, two gaming consoles and all of the family’s presents. Police recovered the items the next day after officers got a tip and searched the home of one of the brothers.

The other three brothers all pleaded guilty and received sentences ranging from 3 1/2 to 7 1/2 years.

Williams faces an extended sentence because of his criminal history, which includes a 2005 drug conviction.
