Hersey extends its winning ways

It was “championship” week for Hersey’s girls volleyball team.

On Thursday, the Huskies won the 10th Mid-Suburban League championship in program history.

On Saturday, they won the championship of the Lake Park Invite, defeating Naperville North in the title match 25-27, 25-12, 15-10.

Anna Mullen-Muhr (33 kills), Erica Hill (26), Gabrielle Olhava (24), Abby Fesl (20), Courtney Stedman (19) and Liz Fuerst (16) led the attack set by Fesl (110 assists from 266 sets).

Taylor Schill paced the back row for coach Nancy Lill’s Huskies with 95 digs while Hill was the top blocker with 16.

Fremd (27-7) went 4-1, falling to Naperville North in pool play and topping Oak Park for third place.

Conant (14-21) defeated Dundee-Crown in the fifth-place match.

The Cougars received contributions from all 15 of its players as Suzi Loznjakovic (70 setting assists), Taylor Levitt (43 digs) and Jenn Donnell (49 kills) led Conant to a 3-2 record.

Other top attackers were DeeDee Durr (18 kills), Sarah Manczko (16) and Daniele Sortino (11).

Lyons Township Invite: Palatine (24-11) went 3-2 and defeated Hinsdale Central 25-15, 25-17 for seventh place.

In that match, seniors Taylor Fricano and Val Soderstrom were 11-of-11 on attack with 5 kills.

Soderstrom served 18-of-19 for 5 aces while Dolen was 8-of-8 with 2 aces.

Dolen also had 12 digs while Alex Heidrich (9 assists) and Sarah Schiffner (8) set the offense.

“Overall, I was very pleased with our effort in this tournament, especially on the heels of Thursday night (lost to Hersey in MSL title match) and looking at quality of competition in this tourney,” said coach Dan Gavin, who directed the Pirates to their first MSL division crown since 1998. “We had different people step up at different times up which was nice to see.”

Buffalo Grove Invite: Wheeling (11-23) put together a 2-2 record, notching wins over Addison Trail 27-25, 14-25, 18-16 and Buffalo Grove 23-25, 25-20, 19-17.

Sydney Keith (26 kills), Amanda Mullin (19 kills), Jessie Zuba (10 kills), Cayla Iwaniuk 41-47 (11 kills), Emily Walker 34-41 (8 kills) and Deanna Kuzmanic (7 kills) led the Wildcats’ attack in the tourney.

Mullin served 8 aces and collected 54 assists while Kuzmanic handed out 31 assists.

Sara Kern anchored the back row with 84 digs.
