Seniors savor this Carmel victory

Carmel Catholic’s girls volleyball team and seniors Caitlin Barry, Mary Paterkiewicz, Maura Zawaski and Lynn Zemaitis had themselves a particularly memorable night Thursday.

Barry delivered 8 kills and 5 aces, and Zemaitis pounded 5 kills, as the Corsairs outlasted visiting Lake Forest 25-20, 22-25, 25-20 on senior night. Zawaski led Carmel with 19 digs, while Paterkiewicz posted 16.

“It was great to get a win on senior night,” Carmel coach David Pazely said. “Our four seniors played very well. We were a bit inconsistent throughout the match but pulled it together in Game 3 for a dramatic comeback victory. Hopefully this energy will inspire the team as we enter the playoffs.”

Junior Alyssa Armada had 7 kills, 16 assists and 13 digs for Carmel (21-16). Gracie Schofield contributed 6 kills, and Elizabeth Rengers racked up 4 blocks.

Carmel will play Barrington at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lake Forest in regional action.

Grayslake North d. Woodstock North: The Knights celebrated senior night with a 25-15, 25-15 win in their Fox Valley Fox Division finale.

Senior Joanna Guhl hit 15 of 15 with 9 kills and served 9 of 9 with 2 aces for Grayslake North (11-24, 3-9), while senior Melanie Aikin added 7 kills. Senior Lisa Lowry set 39 of 40 with 23 assists, and senior Kelsey Klausner had 3 kills, 7 digs and a pair of aces.
