Leyden picks up nonconference win
Junior outside hitter Kelly Murphy (6 aces, 6 kills) and freshman outside hitter Emily Steininger (5 kills) led Leyden’s girls volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-17 victory over visiting Elmwood Park in the nonconference match on Wednesday.
Deerfield d. Maine West: Deerfield won the CSL North match 25-20 25-18 over the Warriors (5-22, 1-7), who were led on attack Ashley Collins (5 kills) and Maddie Plantz (4 kills). Kassidy Riportella handed out 9 assists while Janna Lopez had 5.
“Our hitters were strong in Set 1,” said West coach Randy Tiller. “ Maddie (Plantz) and Ashley (Collins) both found the floor. We stayed with them late into the game, but couldn’t finish. We opened well in Set 2, but something happened.
“It was like someone hit the power switch on our offense. Their tips frustrated us, but we managed to stay with them. We’ll learn from this match and get ready for two tough matches on Friday night in our Pumpkin tournament.”
