Family relieved at bomb plot arrest

Relatives of an Elk Grove Village native who authorities say wanted to destroy several Oklahoma churches say they’re relieved he was arrested.

They detailed the man’s troubled family history.

Authorities in Miami, Okla., charged 23-year-old Gregory Arthur Weiler II with possession of an explosive or incendiary device and violation of the Oklahoma anti-terrorism Act. He was arrested last week.

Police found bomb-making materials in his motel room and notes and maps that included a list of dozens of churches.

Weiler’s cousin Johnny Meyers in Elk Grove Village told the Chicago Tribune that they believe police caught him in time.

Weiler’s aunt, Joanne Meyers, says both the man’s parents committed suicide and suffered from drug use. She says Weiler had also suffered from mental illness.

Weiler is being held without bail.
