Palatine outlasts Saxons, grab first place

Palatine’s girls volleyball team took over first place in the Mid-Suburban West on Tuesday night.

And the Pirates did it dramatic fashion.

After losing the first set to visiting Schaumburg, coach Dan Gavin’s girls (18-4, 7-1) rallied for a 21-25, 25-23, 28-26 triumph that gave them a one-match lead over Fremd (16-5, 6-2), which fell in two sets to Barrington.

Schaumburg (13-8, 5-3) holds third place with two matches remaining in league play.

The Pirates’ come-from-behind victory was sparked on attack by Cassie Chaplinsky (8 kills), Taylor Fricano (7) and Val Soderstrom (6) while Sarah Schiffner (12 assists) and Alex Heidrich (5) set the offense.

Casey Dolen (12 digs) and Fricano (12 digs) each served a pair of aces and Kayla Kendzior collected 9 digs.

Kelly Koutnik (13 kills) and Kiana Lewis (12) led the Saxons’ attack set by Jada Blackwell (17 assists).

Sarah Stuehm collected 17 digs while Lewis had 2 aces and Marisa Christy 1.

Barrington d. Fremd: Host Barrington showed its late-season heart with a 26-24, 25-20, avenging a two-set MSL West loss to the Vikings earlier in the season.

Christy Roney (10 kills), Julia Thompson (8) and Lauren Shechtman (8) led the attack for Barrington (12-9, 4-4) while Nicole Amato (3), Megan Talbot (2) and Shectman (2) were top blockers.

Claire Waliczek handed out 26 assists for the winners and Shechtman recorded 4 aces. Teammate Emily Casaletto sparked the back row with 13 digs and Thompson had 7.

Elk Grove d Prospect: Diamond Boyd (13 kills) and Emily Wary (9) paced the host Grenadiers’ attack in a 33-31, 23-25, 25-16 MSL East victory.

Christine Juhas (14 assists) and Kerry Souder (11) set the offense while Kelsey Conley had 24 digs and Katie Prochenski 8.

Holly Hunt (5 kills) and Carly Thompson (4 kills, 5 blocks) led Prospect’s attack while Annie Geweniger was 31-of-33 serve receiving with 19 digs.

Rolling Meadows d. Wheeling: Rachel Mickey (10 kills, 5 blocks), Morgan Keller (9 kills, 5 blocks) and Ashley Montanez (7 kills) led host Meadows (13-12, 4-4) in a 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 MSL East victory.

Jenny Vliet (18 assists) and Sami Kay (12 assists) set the offense while Grace Skorin recorded 13 digs and Mia Harper 10 against Wheeling (7-15, 1-7).

Conant d. Hoffman Estates: Daniele Sortino (7 kills), Sarah Manczko (5 kills), Katie Lomas (4 kills) and DeeDee Durr (2 kills) were top attackers for host Conant (8-14, 1-7) in a 25-6, 25-19 MSL West triumph.

Taylor Levitt (14-of-14) served 6 aces while Suzi Loznjakovic (13-15) recorded 3.

Loznjakovic (9 assists), Elisa Ambrose (5) and Sarah Mazurek (3) handled the setting chores.

Hoffman (6-20, 0-8) was led on attack by Becca Stoczynski (5 kills) and Stephanie Swan (4).

St. Viator d. Carmel: Junior Molly Ziegler served 4 aces with 8 kills and 21 assists as host St. Viator posted a 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 victory in the ESCC match.

Mary Cleary (11 blocks) and Jana Lopez (12 digs) each had 7 kills and Megan Mueller 5.

Caroline Young and Mueller had 11 digs apiece.

Maine East d. Maine West: Host Maine East posted a 25-23, 25-22 over the Warriors (4-15, 1-5) in the CSL North match.

Ashley Collins (6 kills) and Maddie Plantz (4) led the Warriors’ attack set by Kassidy Riportella (7 assists, 3 aces) and Janna Lopez (9 assists, 1 ace).
